Sailing terms: the nautical glossary with translations
365 terms of seamanship, navigation, safety and radio, each with a short definition and its equivalents in Russian, Dutch, German, French, Italian and Spanish.
How to use the glossary
The terms are the international English ones used on the radio, on charts and in the rules; the equivalents help a mixed crew or a charter abroad. A term's regional variants (British and American usage) are given where they differ. The same glossary is in the Skipperium app, linked to the articles and questions.

Frequently asked questions
What are the basic sailing terms for beginners?
Bow and stern, port and starboard, windward and leeward, tack and gybe, sheet and halyard, the points of sail from close-hauled to running, and the parts of the boat — hull, keel, mast, boom, rudder. Each has its entry below.
What do tacking and gybing mean?
Tacking is turning the bow through the wind; gybing is turning the stern through the wind. As a noun, the tack also says which side the wind comes from: starboard tack, port tack.
Why do sailors say port and starboard instead of left and right?
Because they do not depend on which way you are facing: port is the left side of the vessel looking forward, starboard the right side, for everyone on board.
What do windward and leeward mean?
Windward is the side or direction the wind is coming from; leeward is the side or direction it is blowing to.
Is there a glossary in other languages?
Yes — this glossary exists in English, Russian, German, French, Italian and Spanish, and every term shows its equivalents in the other languages and in Dutch.
